How it works
AVIF is the most efficient mainstream photo format available today. Built on the AV1 video codec, it
routinely produces files half the size of an equivalent JPEG, with support for wide color gamut, HDR and
transparency thrown in. Phone makers have noticed: recent Android phones and some cameras now save photos
as .avif by default. The problem is everything downstream — desktop photo editors, print
kiosks, forum attachments, email clients, corporate systems — many of which stare blankly at an AVIF file.
This converter decodes your AVIF images using your browser's built-in AV1 image decoder and re-encodes
them as standard JPEGs. Drop .avif files onto the upload area, choose a quality, and press
Convert. Because the whole pipeline runs locally, conversion is quick and your photos never leave your
device — particularly reassuring for personal photos.
One honest caveat, stated up front: AVIF decoding depends on your browser. Unlike JPEG, which every browser has decoded for decades, AVIF support arrived more recently. Current Chrome, Edge and Firefox all include AVIF decoders and will convert fine; if your browser can't decode a file, the tool tells you so plainly instead of failing mysteriously — just retry in one of those browsers. This is a genuine limitation of client-side conversion with no server fallback, and we'd rather be upfront about it than pretend otherwise.
As with any lossy-to-lossy conversion, a little detail is lost in re-encoding; at 92% quality you won't see
it, but keep the AVIF as your archival master. Also note that AVIF-only features don't survive the trip:
HDR tone mapping is flattened to standard dynamic range, transparency is composited onto white, and AVIF
image sequences become a single still frame. If instead your goal is the smallest file for a modern
website, don't convert to JPG at all — use our optimizer to produce WebP or
AVIF delivery copies with proper <picture> fallbacks.

What is AVIF?
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses photos even better than WebP — often half the size of JPEG at the same quality — and supports HDR and transparency. Newer phones and cameras save in AVIF by default.
Why convert AVIF to JPG?
Compatibility. AVIF is excellent but young: many desktop programs, printers, older phones and upload forms don’t recognize .avif files yet. JPG opens everywhere, making it the safe format for sharing and printing.
My browser says it can’t decode an AVIF file. What now?
AVIF decoding depends on your browser’s built-in codec. If you see that error, open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox, which all ship AVIF decoders, then convert again.
Will I lose quality converting AVIF to JPG?
Both are lossy, so a second compression pass discards a little detail. At the default 92% quality the difference is imperceptible in normal viewing. Keep the AVIF original as your master copy.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding and re-encoding happen entirely inside your browser. Your images are processed in your browser — nothing is uploaded to any server.
