Why Android struggles with HEIC

HEIC is Apple’s preferred photo format, and Android never fully adopted it. Whether your phone can open a HEIC file depends on your manufacturer, your Android version, and the app you’re using. Samsung’s gallery might handle it while WhatsApp shows a blank thumbnail. A Pixel might open it in Google Photos but fail to attach it to an email.

The inconsistency is the real problem. You can never be sure a HEIC file will work when you need it to — sharing with a friend, uploading to a website, or printing at a shop.

What Google Photos actually does

Upload a HEIC photo to Google Photos and it usually displays fine. That feels like a fix, but it isn’t: the conversion happens on Google’s servers for display purposes. The file sitting in your phone’s storage is still HEIC. Download it back, send it to someone, or try to open it in a different app, and you’re back where you started.

There’s another wrinkle: Google Photos sometimes re-encodes HEIC files on upload, which can strip metadata or subtly alter the image. If you care about keeping your originals intact, relying on a cloud service’s behind-the-scenes conversion isn’t ideal.
